The Deterioration of Marriage

by Carol Rushton

bride-wedding-topperDoes marriage mean anything anymore? It used to mean the union of one man and one woman in holy matrimony. In the twenty-first century, marriage can now be defined as a union between two men, two women, three women, two men and one woman, or any combination you can come up with.

This is having an effect on our society in unforeseen ways. Two women, one in England and one in the United States, decided to marry—themselves.

The Daily Mail UK website carried an article on January 27, 2015, “Woman Marries Herself in Emotional Wedding Ceremony After Failing to Meet ‘The One’ Before the Age of 40.”

“A woman has married herself after failing to find the man of her dreams before turning 40. Yasmin Eleby, from Houston, Texas, tied the knot in a purple gown earlier this month, surrounded by her closest friends and family. As one cannot legally marry one's self in America, the ceremony was spiritual rather than legal, conducted by three ministers, one of whom is Ms. Eleby's sister. ... In an emotional Facebook post afterwards, Ms. Eleby said that she ‘couldn't imagine the ceremony being any more poignant and meaningful.’ She added: ‘I was overwhelmed with the outpouring of love and support that was shown to me during my celebration of love and life.’”

A filmmaker living in England had the same idea in 2014. According to the Daily Mail UK website, “Grace Gelder had been single for six years when she decided to organise the unorthodox ceremony on her own. She proposed to herself on a park bench, bought a ring and a dress and invited all of her friends to watch her make her vows. Ms. Gelder told the Guardian: 'The day was obviously centred on me, the final event being a mirror for me to kiss, but it also felt like I was sharing something very special with my friends, giving everyone an opportunity to reflect on their own ideas of love and commitment. ‘I had one friend in her 50s who said it was one of the best weddings she’d ever been to.’”

Not all of Gelder’s friends were supportive, some saying that the idea was “narcissistic.”

While you might find the idea of marrying yourself somewhat strange, you probably haven’t heard of an American woman who married an amusement park ride. The Telegraph website reported on this bizarre story in, “Woman Getting Married to Fairground Ride.” “Amy Wolfe, a US church organist ... plans to marry a magic carpet fairground ride. This follows a ‘courtship’ of 3,000 rides over ten years with the 80ft gondola ride called 1001 [Nights]. Miss Wolfe, 33, from Pennsylvania, will change her surname to Weber after the manufacturer of the ride she travels 160 miles to visit 10 times per year, according to reports. ‘I love him as much as women love their husbands and know we’ll be together forever,’ she said. ... She claims to believe they share a fulfilling physical and spiritual relationship. ...”

Jesus talked about a time in Matthew 24:37-38 when marriage would be degraded. “But as the days of Noah were, so shall also the coming of the Son of man be. For as in the days that were before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day that Noah entered in the ark. ...” Truly we are living in the last days.
