We Must First Pursue It!

| Josh Shields

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you…” — Matthew 7:7

How many times have you heard this particular verse quoted and preached? If I ask what was taken away from this Scripture, everyone would say the exact same thing, and there is no harm in the answer because it is biblical. ASK, SEEK, AND KNOCK. This is absolutely correct. However, I believe there is a greater depth to the text that we are not catching.

Take another look at it with me if you would. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you.”
No matter whether it is verbal, visual, or physical the answer remains the same to receive results: It takes action to have results, or faith before works.

What would happen if we applied ourselves and we became people of action? What would happen if we began to not only ask, but actually seek and knock? It’s amazing how we want change, but no one wants to pursue change. Even those who talk change are not willing to seek it out. Even if we arrive at the door of change, many will never knock to see if it opens, much less cross the threshold if it does.

The reason the “shall” never shows up—though it is mentioned three times in this verse—is because we never pursue what we are asking, seeking, and knocking for. Psalms 84:11 says, “For the LORD God is a sun and shield: the LORD will give grace and glory: no good thing will he withhold from them that walk uprightly.”

Before we can receive, find, or have it opened we must first, pursue it. We must walk uprightly. We must be on the move.

Our prayer for you this week: May we do more than just quote Scripture, may we become people of action.
