Are Some Conversations Holding You Back?

| Josh Shields

Be not deceived: evil communications corrupt good manners.1 Corinthians 15:33

I recently read a quote that rings true in so many of our lives, “Sometimes you have to unfollow people in real life.” In today’s verbiage we hear this repeatedly when it comes to Facebook, TikTok, and X.

It is amazing how much we hang onto relationships, friendships, and family members that we know we are not going to change, redirect, or fix the situation. Why is it that we waste so much time on people who waste our time, only to find ourselves tangled up in their drama, theater, and production of an unproductive life that is dragging you into places you were never intended to go while they ride the merry-go-round of a circus act in life?

Paul made it plain. Evil communications corrupt good manners. If we are not careful, in our attempt to do right, we can fall prey to the communication we are around. Sometimes you really do have to do in real life what one does in the cyber world. You have to unfollow a friend. They may have been good for a time, period, or season of life but they are not intended to make the whole journey with you.

The father of the prodigal, as hurtful as it was, had to do this very thing as his son walked into the sunset. This did not keep him from watching for his return, but there came a time when he could not go the direction his son was. Jesus did this very thing in John 13:27 when He looked at Judas Iscariot and said, “That thou doest, do quickly.”

May I ask today what communication are you befriending today? How is it affecting the direction of your life?

Our prayer for you this week: May you come to realize there are some conversations holding you back. May yous find the courage to unfollow them today.
