Becoming a Tranformer!

| Josh Shields

And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.

  • Romans 12:2

Conform: To be or act in accord with a set of standards, expectations or specifications.

Reform: To improve by alteration, correction of error, or removal of defects; put into a better form.

Transform: To change markedly the appearance or form of. To change the nature, function, or condition of; convert.

What kind of person, parishioner, or employee are you? While I can find safe zones and dangers in each of these words, which one really best defines what God expects of not only us as followers of Jesus, but as everyday employees, friends, and neighbors?

I’ve heard it said, “Don’t mistake conformity for unity.” Just because I conform to a rule, regulation, standard, or idea does not mean I am in unity with you. I might look like you, but that does not mean that I am going to row the boat with the same vigor as you. While conformity looks good, it often brings stagnation, which leads to bacteria and disease.

Others reading this are “Reformers.” Again, while I can find some good in reforming, too many times, we refuse to let go of the past enough for us to propel forward in our thinking to achieve the real kind of progress we want to see. In turn, we are led right back down the same roads of discovery we have already traveled so many times before.

Paul alludes to the fact we need to be “transformers.” We need to meet the challenge to change, adapt, or convert our nature, function, or condition on the fly, to go from an incandescent person to an LED person. An immediate change in brightness and power consumption can bring a revival not only to our church, but community and workplace.

Our prayer for you this week: May you become a “transformer” through the power of Jesus Christ.
