Faith, Hope, Love, and Charity!

| Josh Shields

“And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these is charity” (1 Corinthians 13:13). This verse emphasizes the importance of love (charity) as the highest virtue among faith and hope.”

Have you ever stopped to think about the power of LOVE? In 1985, Johnny Colla, Huey Lewis, and Christopher Hayes penned the song “The Power of Love” for the hit movie Back to the Future. This became Huey Lewis and the News’ first number one hit on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100.

The chorus speaks a simple truth:

“It don’t need money, don’t take fame

Don’t need no credit card to ride this train

It’s strong and it’s sudden, and it’s cruel sometimes

But it might just save your life

That’s the power of love

That’s the power of love”

Paul tells of the power of love in 1 Corinthians 13, “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels…” If I have the gift of prophecy and understand all mysteries and knowledge… if I have faith to move mountains and bestow all my goods to feed the poor… if I give my body to be burned and have not charity (LOVE) it profits me nothing.

How is it something so cheap and life changing is so hard to do? Johnny Colla, Huey Lewis, and Christopher Hayes got one thing right for sure. Love can’t be bought. It comes from self-sacrifice. It can only be given and received from a pure heart. Jesus proved this on Calvary.

What we could not purchase was truly given by God, a supreme sacrifice of LOVE. He laid down His life for a friend. “Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends” (John 15:13).

Our prayer for you this week: May you come to realize the power of love by laying down your life for a friend, bringing change to your world.
