Praying for Others

| Josh Shields

“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Saviour; Who will have all men to be saved, and to come unto the knowledge of the truth.”  1 Timothy 2:1-4

Paul, instructing a young preacher at Ephesus, gives wonderful insight on how God wants men to dwell, “peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” Why is it that we cannot seem to attain this kind of lifestyle? I’m sure we could debate, discuss, and deliberate on this subject, all of our ideas of what it takes to have peace in this world.

It is amazing to me how the simplest of things are overlooked and considered powerless, weak, and even incapable. The truth is God has given every one of us the right to come before His throne boldly, for this is how we obtain mercy and find grace in our time of need (Hebrews 4:16).

Paul gives us four things to do and who to do them for to change our world.

  • Supplications: Humble and earnest prayer as in worship. A humble petition, humble request, entreaty.
  • Prayers: Act of communication with God, words of thanks, requests, or expressions of devotion.
  • Intercessions: The act of praying on behalf of others or intervening a plea for others.

Who do we do these three things for? Kings and for all that are in authority, Why? That we may lead a peaceable life in all godliness and honesty. Why is it that instead of praying for world leaders, we sit and discuss what we don’t like about them? Do we really want to change the world? If so, supplicate, pray, and intercede for others.

Our prayer for you this week: May you come to realize the power in praying for others.
