Time
Go to now, ye that say, To day or to morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that. – James 4:13-15
I am sure everyone reading this already has most of your week planned out ahead of you. It’s amazing how we take time for granted. Time is the one thing there is no guarantee of. Yet, we spend it as if we can go to the bank and borrow it like money.
The wise man educates us on time, “A time to be born, and a time to die,” in Ecclesiastes 3:2. In no way am I trying to be negative. I am asking the question, how is it we toss around so disrespectfully, something so precious?
Every one of us act as if we own time. Countless phone calls, emails, texts, and Facebook posts go out every minute to our colleagues, family, coworkers, and peers announcing our plans for the weekend, work week, or family get togethers, without ever giving thought to who is really in control.
James told us we should say, “If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that.” When is the last time you stopped and considered God in your plans? Could it be He may not be welcome in that meeting, on our vacation, or in this particular family discussion? Before we get the cart ahead of the horse, maybe we need to slow down and realize we are not promised tomorrow.
Our prayer for you this week: May you come to understand the value of time and take advantage of every moment given to us.
