Assurance of Salvation
1 John 5:13, “These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.” Have you given any thought to where you will spend eternity? We will all spend eternity somewhere. It will either be with God in heaven or in hell with Satan. Many people have a false hope that there is no God and no hell.
What a lie. Do you really want to take the chance that there is no God? You can be assured that there is a God and there is life after death. Eternal life with God is simple. All we must do is believe on the name of Jesus Christ. 1 John 4: 15 says, Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God. I want to point out what this scripture said. Whosoever is the key point. Whosoever means just that, anyone who confesses that Jesus is the Son of God and repents of their sins shall be saved.
There is no assurance of salvation without this belief. People may say, how can I believe on someone that I have never seen? Do you have faith in your doctor when you need surgery, that he will do what he is supposed to do? It is called faith. That is the type of faith that we are to have when we ask for salvation. We may not see it, but it is there. Why can’t we have the same faith and trust that God will forgive us of our sins by simply asking for it?
Some people say that this is old fashion. Maybe it is, but that is the way that we are supposed to ask for forgiveness. God has not changed the message of salvation nor the way that it is to be presented. One of the main purposes of the church is to get people saved and to present the message of salvation. If you are not hearing sermons of salvation or if there isn’t an invitation to accept Christ, then find a church that offers this.
We have assurance of salvation if we keep His commandants. But this is old testament; yes, it is. God didn’t abolish the old testament when Christ came into the world. We are to live by every word of God. Not pick and choose what we want to believe. 1 John 2: 4, I know him and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. We are to love God and Jesus. We are not to put the world above either one of them.
It is a mistake for us to love what the world offers us. We are to love God and Jesus above all things. God is offering us eternal life with Him. The things of this world will pass away. We cannot take anything with us when we die. We are to rely on God. We are to continually practice righteousness rather then sin. 1 John 2: 29, states, If ye know that he is righteous, ye know that every one that doeth righteousness is born of him.
We are to abide in Him. 1 John 3: 6, states, Whosoever abideth in him sinneth not; whosoever sinneth hath not seen him, neither know him. Verse 8, He that committeth sin is of the devil; for the devil sinneth from the beginning. God made it plain that we are not to sin, but to live a life of righteousness. Assurance of salvation means that we are to love one another. 1 John 3: 14, We know that we have passed from death unto life, because we love the brethren. He that loveth not his brother abideth in death.
There is so much hate in the world. The devil is stirring up much hate and discontent because he knows that his time is short. He doesn’t want us to get along and is doing everything that he can to destroy relationships. Don’t allow him to do anything that will cause you to hate your brothers and sisters. Resist him using the name of Jesus and he has to flee. We need more love in this world. Hate has no place in our lives.
God has given us His Holy Spirit. We received it when we became Christians. This helps us to know that God is with us. This will help us to follow the examples that Christ had when He was on the earth. Jesus was perfect and led that type of life. He showed compassion towards people. He was led by the Spirit of God. We are to do the same things by using His example of a sinless life. Do we still sin? Yes, we do. But we are forgiven.
The assurance of salvation is part of our walk with Jesus. It shows the world that we are different. The world looks at us and sees whether or not we are living up to what we claim to be. If they see that there is no difference, they will want no part of becoming a Christian. Throughout 1 John, John was telling us that eternal life is only found in faith in Jesus. We are to abide in God’s word which we have heard from the beginning.
We are to long for the return of Jesus. 1 John 3: 2, Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be; but we know that when he shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as he is. Verse 3, And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as he is pure. Are you longing for the return of Jesus? This is our assurance of salvation. It lies in our faith in Jesus. Do you want the assurance of salvation? If you do, reach out to Jesus and ask Him to forgive you of your sins.
